Species notes / Guinea pigs

Guinea pigs: start with their needs.

A human friend or a rabbit is not a substitute for a suitable guinea pig companion.

The floor plan matters

Think about usable ground-level movement, accessible shelters and where each animal can get away from disturbance. Space taken up by equipment is no longer open space. Read the full housing guidance before choosing the enclosure and consult a knowledgeable rescue about the group. A multi-level product photograph is not proof that the arrangement provides suitable usable space for guinea pigs.

Keep companions and resources in the picture

Guinea pigs need compatible guinea pig company unless an appropriate professional advises otherwise. A rabbit or human is not a substitute. Ask for species-experienced help with companionship decisions rather than simply adding an animal. Check that the group can access essential resources and retreats. If making a sitter handover, explain the existing group arrangement and who to contact about a problem.

Hay access is part of the ordinary day

Good-quality hay should remain available, rather than being treated as an occasional enrichment treat. Read the full feeding guidance for a balanced guinea pig diet and ask your vet about individual needs. When considering a holder, assess whether the animals can reach the hay easily and whether gaps or openings could trap them. A label saying “small animal” is not enough to settle those questions.

Observe without changing the reason to hide

Watch from a calm position and allow the animals to use their shelters. A guinea pig choosing a retreat is not an instruction to remove it for a clearer view. Use the notebook to describe the activity and context you saw. It does not interpret behaviour or diagnose illness. If you have a concern, contact a vet instead of relying on a notebook trend or a shopping suggestion.
